Assessment: Grades will be assessed as follows:

  • 25% First Essay
  • 35% Second Essay
  • 40% Third Essay

Attendance: Attendance is imperative. I shall take attendance regularly. Clearly, there will be occasions when medical or other reasons will force you to miss a class, but if you arrange your affairs carefully now you’ll reduce the likelihood of such interruptions.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Class preparation. It is crucial that you thoroughly and carefully read all assigned texts prior to our class meetings.
  • Class contributions are also essential. Although it takes different students different amounts of time to do an assignment, you should allow two hours for every hour of class time. Please set up other obligations (e.g. work) accordingly.
  • Student conduct. You’re expected to treat your classmates considerately, to participate in class discussion, to arrive at the start of class, and to stay to the end. If you must arrive late or leave early, please sit near the door: walking across the room distracts folks who are trying to work.

Notes on Papers

  • All essays must be typed, double-spaced, and with a font size no larger than 12.
  • All essays must include endnotes (or footnotes) and references (or bibliography). You may use either the humanities style (footnotes or endnotes which include shortened references) or the style of the social science (with shortened references in the text, e.g., Willett 1999:44). Similarly, you must reference your sources for all visual materials (e.g., photos, maps, etc.) that may accompany your essay.
  • Your work will be graded on its clarity, coherence, and cogency.

IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL COURSE REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A PASSING GRADE IN THIS COURSE.
